Time to Reflect on REFRACTION
As the REFRACTION exhibition comes to a close at Studio 10 in East Quay, I find myself reflecting on what has unfolded over the past months. What began as a collaboration with the environmental consultancy Geckoella has grown into something far richer than an exhibition. It has become a conversation about curiosity, risk-taking and the value of creative thinking.

One memorable moment was welcoming the Geckoella team into the gallery. Walking through the show together with Director Geologist Andy King, we talked about crystal systems, observation and the parallels between scientific investigation and studio practice. The discussion quickly moved beyond materials and techniques into something more fundamental: how ideas take shape.

During my creative thinking workshop that followed, the team drew crystals with charcoal – first carefully, then intuitively. The contrast between those drawings revealed a simple truth: innovation often begins when we allow ourselves to look differently. Creative thinking is not a talent reserved for artists or scientists; it is a habit that can be practised and strengthened.
And the story is not over. During the exhibition, a new fictional crystal emerged in the studio – Alispangalite – a reminder that imagination is always capable of generating something unexpected. I will be performing as Alispangalite at the Hatch Fashion Show this Sunday and again on the 10th April.
